Being Christlike Through The Trials

It's not hard to get self centered when you are going through a major trial. Watching your husband's physical and mental health deteriorate rapidly from strong and intelligent to feeble in mind and body can do that to you. And most people would say you had just cause.
That's the way it was with me. No one blamed me if I didn't join in their excited little chats about what was happening in their world. I was in a different world, and what was happening to my husband was all that

Two Little Roses

Two little roses still cling to their stems outside my kitchen window. I have watched as the buds appeared and wondered how far they would get before the cold of a Canadian December would discourage them, and they would shrivel and die.
There was a chill in the air this week as the thermometer dipped below zero. The snow started falling, blanketing my garden, but the two brave roses are still holding on.
Their faces droop a bit from the weight of the snow, and they seem to be huddling

A Dysfunctional Mind Doesn’t Change The Soul
Posted: 7:00 am on December 03, 2010 2 Comments
"Help me Lord! Help me get well. Help me to get well, and . . .
Lord help me!
I need to get . . ."
It was the closest to a clear thought he had had in the last couple of days. It was the cry of his soul.
And within an hour of having breathed those words, he was thinking more clearly again, speaking in sentences and handling his basic needs. It was the second time that had happened in the past week.
I was awed by the way God was working in him, even in his low mental state. It was

Daddy, Daddy, Don’t Leave Me, Daddy - A Christmas Memory

"Daddy, Daddy, don't leave me, Daddy!" The echo of those pitiful words still tie a knot in my stomach every time I remember that late December evening.
The Christmas pageant had probably been the best I had ever written or directed. The little children had done an adorable job on the Nativity scene, and the juniors had been fantastic in their depiction of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I was so proud of them.
But it was the ending by the youth class that really left us in

A Good Samaritan Soldier On Thanksgiving Evening

We had almost reached our Georgia destination when our car sputtered and died. It was evening and the night was black. We were on a winding road away from any street lights and right on a curve. This was before we owned a cell phone, and to make matters worse traffic was sparse. It was Thanksgiving Day in the USA.
Our two daughters, my husband, and I had been looking forward to attending some special services and visiting friends in Georgia. We had made this trip before, and every time

Celebrating Thanksgiving In The Hospital
Posted: 8:58 am on November 24, 2010 2 Comments
We celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving from inside a hospital this year. It was probably the most meaningful Thanksgiving we have ever had.
When I was told that my husband would be stuck in a hospital until long past Thanksgiving this year, it saddened us as a family. Thanksgiving was always a big day for us. We would plan it well in advance, deciding who would host the meal and who would bring what. The day would be a real festive celebration, and the key figure in that celebration and

Give Thanks When My Husband Has Dementia?
Posted: 8:00 am on November 21, 2010 1 Comment
I was OK when my husband became ill. I knew God had a plan. I was still thankful when the doctor said his heart valve wasn't working, and he needed an operation. God was providing us with one of the best heart doctors in the country, and I knew the Lord was with us. I could say, "If he lives I will praise Him, and if he dies I will still praise Him. I was thankful when, a couple of weeks after the operation, Bruce's kidneys started working again, and he no longer needed dialysis. I was
