How do we raise our children to divorce secular music?
I am not ignorant to the fact that much of the music I grew up with drove my parents crazy. “Runnin’ With The Devil” by Van Halen was one of my favorite songs, and trust me, I lived up to the lyrics.
The only Christian music I was exposed to at church was 15th-century pipe organ music. I love God, but I hated the music. I have always been hooked first by a great melody before listening to the lyrics.
Many of the songs I grew up with in the ‘70s and ‘80s masked their meanings. But let’s face it, today’s music is much more blatant.
Music is a strong influence, personally and socially, especially in these days where everyone owns a cell phone capable of playing music or an iPod.
Music is a battleground of good and evil. Don’t be ignorant… It is spiritual warfare at its core.
Children spend a great deal of their lives discovering themselves and their character. They will turn to music which reflects their situations and emotions, much like us adults. However, children are more easily influenced due to their immaturity and ignorance. A strong rhythm and melody could be all it takes to hook your child to a terrible message, or a terrible circle of friends and influences.
However, there are alternatives for secular music.
Christian music is expanding into a wider variety of genres, including rap, hard rock and country.
Now I know what you’re thinking, “My kids are never going to abandon secular music for Christian.”
So what is a parent to do?
Begin by getting involved in your local church and begin to expose them to God and contemporary Christian music. Many churches today have contemporary services which include complete bands.
Christian music is not just large venue arena music. Many large churches host national and local concerts. Most Christian artists are into it for the ministry, and will go out of their way to interact with your kids.
The only time I listen to mainstream music is when my daughter is listening. It is depressing to hear the worsening negativity in the lyrical content of modern music. As with everything else, it continues to push the morality envelope, and will only worsen.
Christian music is more than creativity, it is a ministry tool. It is positive lyrically and contains relatable life stories.
Again, back to reality: You are never going to force Christian music down your children’s throat.
Expose them to God.
Expose them to Christian music.
Be the example and pray.
Perhaps one day they will discover God’s will.
Plant the seed!
