Gay marriage has been legalized in Washington, D.C.
Today the D.C. Council passed a measure which had been building political steam for months to allow gays and lesbians to legally marry.
The bill passed by an 11-2 vote.
It was sponsored by David Catania, an openly gay member of the council.
One of the two dissenters was former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry.
After recent setbacks in New Jersey, New York and Maine, D.C. becomes the sixth U.S. jurisdiction to sanction gay marriage, joining Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.
Opposition leaders, including Bishop Harry Jackson of Beltsville, Md., and the National Organization for Marriage, which has been a major national funding source for traditional marriage advocates both vowed to fight the measure in the courts and in its required Congressional approval.
