Is God Trying to Get Bret Michaels’ Attention?

Rocker Bret Michaels has experienced quite a year. First it was an emergency appendectomy, then a brain hemorrhage and now in January he is scheduled to have surgery to repair a hole in his heart.
Why am I telling you this and why should you care? Well, he has been heavy on my heart from the first time he was sent to the hospital. I grew up listening to Bret Michaels' group Poison. A lot has changed in my life since then, most importantly that I came into a relationship with Jesus. With that, my musical tastes have definitely changed.
While you won’t catch me listening to old tracks of Poison, you will hear me pray for Bret Michaels. In fact I have prayed for many of my old favorites, including Michael Jackson.
The question that has run through my mind, “Is God trying to get Bret Michaels' attention?” just can’t be shaken. I can’t help but think that anyone who has come close to death so many times must have a purpose beyond what we might imagine.
The reason I bring this up is because during the time he was in the hospital from the brain hemorrhage, a friend of mine on Facebook was imploring Christians to pray for him. She, too, had grown up listening to him and she was greatly concerned for the state of his soul. Sadly, she received some nasty replies from believers.
Isn’t that what we as believers should be doing? Praying for those who don’t know God? What I felt some of these believers were saying is, “He doesn’t deserve to be prayed for.” His lifestyle is exactly why he should be prayed for!
It reminds me of how Jesus was criticized for the company He was keeping. How dare He actually eat and fellowship with sinners? Jesus said that it wasn’t the healthy that needed a physician but the sick. In other words, He needed to be with those who needed spiritual healing.
Because of my past I sometimes feel like I have a special gift to be able to pray for those that may be seen as undesirables. I have a heart for the musicians of today who don’t know Jesus. So while God may be trying to get Bret Michaels' attention, I believe He may also be trying to get the attention of believers.
It's time we start getting past ourselves and put our focus on the “sick.” You just might be the only one who is praying for them.
