How Should Christians Handle Halloween?

While Christians may differ in opinion about whether or not it is appropriate to celebrate Halloween, there is still one overriding issue.  How should Christians, who choose not to celebrate Halloween, handle it?

Is it right to hand out candy if your own children are not allowed to go trick or treating?  Do you allow your child to dress up at school only or to participate in the “fall festival”?

I can’t help but think of Romans 14:4-6, especially the part of the verse that says: Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.  What one person may be fully convinced of in their mind to do may not be what another one is.  That doesn’t necessarily make one right and another wrong.

Believe it or not, some things really aren’t black and white.  What I choose to do may be completely opposite from what you choose to do.  So the answer to the question about how should Christians handle Halloween is completely between you and God.

The way I look at it is if you feel completely right before God about the choice you make, then great.  However if there is any doubt then it should be reconsidered.

I know of many Christians who do pass out candy to trick-or-treaters but they also pass out tracts telling them about Jesus.  Other Christians will take their children to a fun place like Chuck E Cheese while other kids are trick-or-treating.  It gives their children an opportunity to have fun and avoid a large crowd.

Then there are Christians who completely ignore the day.  They don’t participate in it nor pay any mind to it.  It is just yet another day.

It has to be what is best for your family and what you feel God leading you to do.  But be careful to not be so quick to judge another family for the choices they make.  God doesn’t work in every family and in every situation the same.

Your best bet is to take whatever plans “you” have and lay them at His feet.  He will direct you in the way you should go.
