House Speaker Boehner Praises Christian Media Leaders, Criticizes Washington

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) spoke to Christian media leaders Sunday evening at the annual National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) convention in Nashville, TN, and addressed the economic and moral implications of Washington’s spending binge and efforts to create a better environment for job creation. Throughout his political commentary at his first formal speaking engagement outside Washington since becoming Speaker, Boehner continually validated the Judeo-Christian principles upon which America was founded.
Boehner spoke highly of the NRB’s efforts to take God’s message of hope and healing abroad, calling it “important work.” He emphasized that it was “freedom of worship” that brought the first settlers to America, adding that freedom itself is a God-given right that people must ensure government doesn’t take away. Specifically, he addressed the House majority’s commitment to fighting a government takeover of the Internet, and to seeing that the government does not reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
“No one should fear the battle of ideas;” said Boehner, “it’s the lifeblood of our democracy. When it’s alive and well, so is our country.”
In addition to these and other threats to our basic freedoms, the Speaker said there is another danger that dwarfs them all – the national debt. “We’re broke. Broke, going on bankrupt.” Boehner described the debt crisis as a mortal threat and a moral one. Quoting Proverbs, he contrasted the biblical principle of leaving an inheritance to one’s children with the American practice of leaving a debt instead. Speaker Boehner went so far as to say America treats its children “shabbily,” children who if born on this night would inherit $45,000 in debt upon arrival. “The more the government spends and borrows today, the more our children are forced to pay,” said Boehner.
The Speaker warned of a cycle of fiscal dependence forming between the government and the people, noting that, ironically, President Obama recently asked the Congress to approve an increase in the debt limit.
In concluding his comments, Speaker Boehner asked those in attendance to pray – for freedom fighters, for Israel, for the persecuted, for the President and all government officials, and for fellow citizens of the United States of America. The NRB media leaders responded with a standing ovation to his stated commitment to freedom, life, small government, fiscal responsibility and conservative values.
