A Steel Pole

James 3:8-10But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth comes both blessing and cursing. My brethren, things ought not to be this way (NASB).

At school the other day, our granddaughter firmly attached her tongue to a steel pole. It took great effort and several people to detach pole from child. When she could talk, she explained that she wanted to see what would happen. Now she knows. She won’t be sticking her tongue there again!

My tongue also gets into trouble, almost every day. My words thoughtlessly scramble out, causing hurt, discouragement and freezing atmosphere. “Is there a steel pole handy, anyone?”

God says our tongues are impossible to tame. Does this mean we are to give up hope and let our words fly wherever they choose? Never! Remember, with God all things are possible!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, We offend and hurt with our tongues. Move us beyond the desire to hear ourselves speak and into a place of listening to the hearts of others. Thanks. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
