Babies in Church

Our newest family baby made his debut at church recently. He cooed and smiled and entertained all most everyone around him. One lady made it a point to smile encouragement about the noise. She seemed to be saying “We don’t mind such happy little noises from this sweetie pie” Others were not so kind. They glared from their lofty positions a pew or two away.

I couldn’t help but think of Jesus and the little children. Were the disciples like those who frowned in the pews? Did they miss the joy of the moment when a child laughed or a baby cooed?

People brought babies to Jesus, hoping he might touch them. When the disciples saw it, they shooed them off. Jesus called them back. “Let these children alone. Don’t get between them and me. These children are the kingdom’s pride and joy. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in.”(Luke 18:15-17, MSG)

Do we welcome little ones to Jesus? What do we do to encourage them, to bring their hearts closer to him?

Prayer- Father God, we know better, we really do. Sorry. Amen.
