Depending

“Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.” — Augustine

Apparently my elderly friend didn’t hear me clearly when I quoted this phrase to her because she responded with … “Yes, those adult diaper things come in handy don’t they!”

We chuckle over this but maybe we don’t hear it clearly either. Are we praying our heart out for something while reclining on the vestibule of life and doing nothing?

Good school grades do not come to those who do not study. A job promotion doesn’t arrive for those who do not do their current job well. A fine meal does not grace a table if the cook doesn’t put the food in the oven. A new novel doesn’t make the New York Times best-selling list if it does not get written. I could go on but you get the idea.

So that you may bear yourselves becomingly and be correct and honorable and command the respect of the outside world, being dependent on nobody [self-supporting] and having need of nothing. (1 Thessalonians 4:12, AMP)

What is on our to-do list today?

Prayer: Lord, forgive us for dilly-dallying. Show us anew what we are to do today and give us the gumption to get to it. Amen.
