Dreaded Words

Our questions reveal our hearts. Just look at Luke chapter 10, 25-37, NIV.

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

But he wanted to justify himself so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

At this point, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan and then asks this.

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The law expert had to admit that it was “The one who had mercy on him.”

Then Jesus offers these dreaded words. “Go and do likewise.”

You can practically hear the law expert’s thoughts when he hears the dreaded words, go and do likewise. “Go and do likewise? Are you kidding? I don’t want to be one of those people! Don’t you see I am already one of the ‘good’ people, Jesus? I keep the law. What are you thinking?”

Jesus didn’t see it that way.

Prayer – Lord, please give us the courage to go and do likewise. Amen
