We strive for the new us all the time or at least we should be. However, it occurred to me that perhaps we should list who we are not.
I am not a bad mother, daughter, father, wife, husband or friend. (Take your pick!)
I am not distracted from my goals. I am not a law breaker. I am not short of time.
I am not a slacker. I am not a crook. I am not prepared to let life pass by.
I am not an overeater. I am not unemployed… I am not a dishonest person.
I am not a trouble maker. I am not willing to get sick. My ears are not stopped up.
I am not willing to pass up learning. I am not a cheater. I am not distracted from my goals.
Only when the nots are gone can we begin to see our real selves.
I am a good citizen. I make wise decisions. I am an honest person. I love my neighbour. I am always listening for the voice of god.
Find your own self, friend. Take the time for this little exercise. You will be surprised what truths come out.
Note how Joseph’s “I am and I am not” are included in the same sentence.
And her promised husband Joseph, being a just and upright man and not willing to expose her publicly and to shame and disgrace her, decided to repudiate and dismiss divorce her quietly and secretly. (Matthew 1:19, AMPC)
Of course, Joseph did not divorce Mary. He listened to God. And thus, we have Christmas and Jesus, salvation and hope.
Do you? Do not think that I have come to do away with or undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfill them. (Jesus speaking from Matthew 5:17, AMPC)
Prayer- God, we are not able to live well without you. Speak into our hearts Lord. Amen.
