He (Amaziah) did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly. (2 Chronicles 25:2, NIV)
Do you know what that gets you? Trouble with a capitol T!
Who among us still tries to get by on bits and pieces? We know the right thing to do, but we do it half-heartedly. Amaziah gives us a clear picture of what comes next.
When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods, bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them.
(2 Chronicles 25:14, NIV)
When God is not your everything, it leaves room for other things. Amaziah added other gods into his life. They took up the part of his heart that wasn’t serving God. From there it was all down hill.
The chapter ends this way.
From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they conspired against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. He was brought back by horse and was buried with his ancestors in the City of Judah.
(2 Chronicles 25:27-28, NIV)
