Have you ever prayed along these lines?
Well God, I have had enough. You promised not to give me more than I can bear, but you are way overboard on this one. You promise that we are your beloved, your chosen. If this is your chosen, then I’d hate to be on your rejection list!
Yes, I am guilty. But I am also wrong theologically.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
God won’t let us be tempted beyond our ability, but then when we ask, he steps in to help. Of course, we get to the end of ourselves. If we didn’t why would we have any need to cry out to God for help?
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
I pray with all my heart; answer me, Lord! I will obey your decrees. I cry out to you; rescue me, that I may obey your laws. (Psalm 119:145)
“Hear me lord and answer me for I am poor and needy.” (Psalm 86:1)
“Let your compassion quickly meet our needs because we are on the brink of despair.” (Psalm 79:8)
And at the end of ourselves, we find God, our help and our salvation.
