Hebrews 12:1–Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us. Let us run with patient endurance and steady, active persistence the appointed course of the race set before us. (AMP)
“Pack your oldest underwear.” suggested my friend. “Throw the used pair into the hotel wastebasket. Your suitcase gets lighter every day.”
Well, I just happened to be preparing for a trip to Israel! Yes, I was and yes I did! All my old underwear, with holes, elastic and faded colour went into my bag.
Then I read Psalm 71:9. Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent! (RSV)
Thankfully, closer study revealed that the psalmist was speaking about himself, not my old underwear! At first, the discarding was painful but I didn’t know anyone in Israel. I’d be in a new hotel the next day and if the maid snooped, it served her right.
What a freeing experience. I got rid of stuff I no longer needed; stuff that had only weighed me down.
Wouldn’t it be great to get rid of old sins as easily as old underwear? The Bible says we can. Get the wastebasket handy. Let’s start throwing!
Prayer: Lord, take our weighty stuff right now so that we can run the race you have set for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
