Status of YouTube weddings debated

If you spend a lot of time online and you haven’t seen the video yet, you should.
Kevin Heinz and Jillian Peterson unwittingly became Internet stars with the YouTube broadcast of their wedding starting with an usher throwing programs in the air like confetti and ending with Peterson sashaying down the aisle to the strains of Chris Brown’s Forever.
USA Today published a piece today about how church weddings are rapidly trending away from the familiar image of the bride gliding down the aisle to the strains of organ music.
The question then becomes, as is played out in the commentary stream on the story and what I would encourage here, is this a big deal?
Weddings are intended to be a once in a lifetime event that should be memorable and joyous.
Certainly weddings I’ve attended outside of church walls tend to be more informal. Is there a greater responsibility on the part of the couple and the clergy to observe more traditional decorum inside church walls?
Limits should be agreed upon by the bride, groom, clergy and families involved. If a church is uncomfortable with an approach to a ceremony, it can reject it. By the same token, couples do and should have the right to steer the direction for their ceremony.
In many ways the discussion, while interesting culturally, pales in comparison to larger realities; as anyone who has been married for any length of time knows, the real work of marriage has nothing to do with song choices and flower arrangements.
