Surprised by Life

My friend Karen Lubbers is a missionary in Uganda but recently was surprised by an illness. While at first glance it seemed like a bad thing, Karen found the grace of God in the midst of it. Here is part of her story.

In Canada we’ve just celebrated a feast of Thanksgiving,
And I’m happy to spend time with family, with memories reliving.
The Lord must know I needed a rest from caregiving
and I hope that I last long in the land of the living.

This is the fourth month away from service abroad,
as I rest at my parents and spend time with God.
The medical appointments have come quickly now – and I’m awed,

I’m also glad I can spend time with Dad and my fishing rod.

So, I’m here in Canada, awaiting an operation,
While my heart longs for Uganda – that struggling nation.
I am enjoying the changes of season in creation.
And I will trust in my Saviour throughout the duration.

How do you face the unexpected?

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. (1 Peter 4:12, NIV)

Here is Karen’s prayer. She asks us to pray it for her.

Prayer-Lord on Karen’s behalf we pray…for a heart full of peace, and that the weary days and constant pain will soon cease. That her love for Jesus and His world will increase. And on her behalf, thank you God for being with her till her day of release! Amen.
