When You Don’t Understand

Do you sometimes feel like you haven’t understood a word you read in scripture? This can happen to anyone. What do you do about that?

Well we can turn to a Bible dictionary to explain any language difficulaties, or a Bible handbook to explain cultural barriers or even a Bible commentary for the opinjions of Bible scholars. Why we can even just change to another version of the Bible.

We can ask God to explain things to us. We can talk to friends. We can just skip that passage. Sooner or later it will become clear to you.

The Bible is a bit like eating a piece of fish.. The flesh is tasty and sweet in our mouth. The bones dig in and we set them aside. That’s the hard- to- understand bits.

We are not God. We can’t understand everything in his word. But we are smart enough to be blessed by the good bits and enjoy them whole-heartedly.

And we can always pray Paul’s prayer for ourselves.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. (Ephesians 1:17)
