A neighbor just gave me this recipe for Lemon Flummery. Some of the ingredients looked familiar, but what on earth was a flummery?
According to the dictionary it is a cream or custard dessert, set with gelatine and sometimes flavored with Madeira and lemon.
It is also meaningless words, statements, or language, especially when intended as flattery.
Are you guilty? I know I am. Who hasn’t said ‘nice’ stuff just because?
Psalm 12:2- To his neighbor each one speaks words without use or worth or truth; with flattering lips and double heart [deceitfully] they speak (AMP).
Psalm 5:9-For there is nothing trustworthy or steadfast or truthful in their talk; their heart is destruction [or a destructive chasm, a yawning gulf]; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter and make smooth with their tongue (AMP).
God doesn’t care for that kind of talk.
Psalm 12:3-4-May the Lord cut off all flattering lips and the tongues that speak proud boasting, Those who say, With our tongues we prevail; our lips are our own [to command at our will]—who is lord and master over us (AMP?)
My recipe is not a true flummery because it doesn’t contain gelatine. Let’s pray our words are not flummery either, but instead truthful kindnesses.
Prayer: Lord, when our brains think of speaking flummery, help our mouths to stay shut. In Jesus' name. Amen.
