Advice From a Tree

The t-shirt boasted a picture of a tree and these words. “Stand tall and proud. Sink your roots into the earth. Be content with your natural beauty. Go out on a limb. Drink plenty of water. Remember your roots. Enjoy the view.”

God says- Psalm 1:3 - He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers (NSV).

The Ladies Aid in Lundar, Manitoba added “Bjork” to the title of their cookbook because the birch (Bjork) tree is apparently the only leaf bearing tree in Iceland. The money raised from book sales provided support and assistance to the sick and needy in the community, just as the leaves and branches of the birch tree provided shelter from the heat.

It’s easy enough to print up a tee-shirt, read a Bible verse or dedicate a cookbook. It’s not so easy to follow the advice.

"He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit" (Jeremiah 17:8).

What kind of tree are we? Where are our roots?  Do we go out on a limb for others? Enjoy our daily life? Refuse to wither or give up in the bad times? Help others in whatever way we can?

Prayer: Lord, may we be a sturdy birch, a towering maple or a strong oak tree, but never a crab apple, a stinging holly, a shivering popular or a weeping willow. For Christ’s sake. Amen.
