Matthew 14:28-30-And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus. But when he perceived and felt the strong wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me [from death] (AMP)!

Peter was sinking alright but he hadn’t reached the drowning stage yet. How do we know that? Well the Bible says so and also because a drowning person generally cannot wave splash or yell for help. In fact they could drown while you are watching them.

How can this be? It’s called the Instinctive Drowning Response.

According to Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D, Authority on Aquatic Safety and Rescue, except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help because they are too busy trying to breath. Their mouths aren’t above water long enough to both breath and yell. They cannot wave or even grab rescue equipment because their arms naturally press down on the water so their body will go up out of the water. Their body stays upright and they have 20-60 seconds before they go under.

Are you drowning? Can’t catch your breath? No energy to help yourself? Don’t wait any longer. Call out to Jesus. He saved Peter and he will save you.

Prayer: Hear our cry, O God; Attend to our prayer. From the end of the earth we cry to You, When our hearts are overwhelmed; Lead us to the rock that is higher than we are. For You are our shelter and a strong tower from the enemy. (Psalm 61:1-3, AMP)
