Mittened

Apparently in older days, if a fellow got the gift of a teeny-tiny mitten, it was the kind version of “Get lost, Mister, our courting days are over!” (Privately, I thought the gal might have at least made a pair of mittens to break the news.)
Anyway when I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary, this is what I found.
“To get the mitten; of a lover, to be dismissed or rejected; hence in a wider application, to be dismissed from any office or position.”
I guess we’ve all ‘got the mitten of rejection’ in one way or another, haven’t we? Whether jobs, friends, positions, loved ones or possessions, rejection always hurts.
Thankfully there is One who will never ‘mitten’ us, even though he himself was ‘mittened’ on our behalf.
Matthew 21:42- “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes’?
Mark 8:31- He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again (NIV).
Prayer: Father God, thank you for your Son who took rejection on our behalf. Amen.
