The French call it "escroquerie." The Spanish say "chanchullo." Here we call it Granny Fraud.
Somebody calls and pretends to be a grandchild. “Oh Granny I am in jail in Florida. Please help me and don’t tell Mom and Dad!” Granny rushes to the bank and sends a couple of thousand dollars.
Another calls and says “I am calling to see that your credit card is up to date. Please give me the card numbers.” And someone does, later to discover their card was used to buy a motorcycle in New York.
We can help ourselves a bit by being less open on our Facebook page, realizing that banks don’t call us, shredding documents and examining our bank and charge card statements carefully.
The Bible has its scammers too. Laban scammed Jacob over wives, sheep and property (Genesis 29-31). In return, Jacob pulled a few stunts of his own.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it generally is…except for the promises of God. They are every bit as good as they sound. How do we know? The Bible tells us so and God backs them all with his personal guarantee, Christ.
2 Timothy 2:19- Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness (NIV).”
