Essentials for Successful Career Change

If you’re thinking about a career change, you should plan carefully to ensure a successful transition. Every decision you make should take into account the impact of your actions both now and in the future. You may have hundreds of questions running through your mind about how to get started searching for a new job or career. Begin your planning efforts by seeking wisdom from the Lord. Scripture tells us that when we commit our work to Him, our plans will succeed (Proverbs 16:3). Consider these four essentials when committing to God your plans for a successful career change.

1) Preparation and Homework

Determine the jobs or professions you would like to investigate for a career change. Learn as much as you can about the companies you identify, their leaders and, most of all, the work environments. Get job descriptions and detailed information about each opportunity you are considering. Evaluate them against criteria you have developed that define your desired career outcomes.

2) Reasons to Change

Balance your enthusiasm and intensity for prospective career opportunities. On the surface, the grass may look greener with extra money, perks and advancement; but a more thorough investigation may indicate that you will have to work longer hours and weekends to succeed. Scripture is very clear that we should not wear ourselves out trying to get rich (Proverbs 28:20); so watch out for promises of instant success or quick fixes to problems you may be experiencing in your current job. Resist the urge to run from conflict or difficult bosses and co-workers.

3) Career Action Plan

A career action plan helps you find the best route or direction to take to achieve your career change objectives. Your plan should list as many of the activities and actions you will complete, as well as the resources you will need to make the career change happen.

4) Mentor or Career Advisor

If you’re serious about changing your job or career, find a mentor or career advisor to help you get the most from your activities and to motivate you to stick with your plans. Changing your career without seeking proper guidance and wise counsel can cause your plans to fail (Proverbs 15:22).

Take your time and don’t rush into a career change if you’re not truly ready to do so. However, don’t wait until everything is perfect either. You’ll never be absolutely and totally ready or ultimately prepared to change your career. Most times it will require a leap of faith!
