50 Things

Philippians 3:13-14: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (KJV)

Years ago, I made a list of 50 things to do before I die. Some were really idle thinking, the stuff of dreams. When the paper surfaced from the depths of my file cabinet, I check-marked my way through it to discover that I had actually accomplished many of my goals but that the results were not lasting.

No. 9-plant winter bulbs (Did this in 1997. We moved in 2000!)

No. 10-use up all my fabrics. (Not possible unless I stop buying!)

No. 11-finish all craft projects. (got new ideas and more craft stuff!)

In hindsight some goals seemed rather foolish. Why visit a chocolate factory when history shows that chocolate is not good for this body? Why determine to ride the Niagara River on the Maid of the Mist, when the very thought terrified me?

Paul didn’t plague himself with a long list of things to do. His one aim was to forget the past and reach ahead, by pressing on to God’s high calling on his life. His list has stood the test of time.  Will ours?

Prayer: Dear God, Thanks for making life so simple! Our list only needs to read as follows. Goal one through 50. Press on toward Your calling for us in Christ Jesus. Amen.
