Ever felt like you were cheated somehow because you weren’t ‘beautiful’, as the world defines beautiful? Ever comfort yourself with the words “Pretty is as Pretty does”? Ever been spoken of as someone with a ‘great personality’?
Take heart. There was a common man, not beautiful in any respect and hardly noticeable to the people of His day. But His personality changed the world.
His name is Jesus, no longer a man but now a risen Savior. It was His personality, His willingness to die in order that we live, that provides salvation to the world.
You may find yourself asking the question ‘Why did God make me so ugly and everyone else so good looking?’ Let’s take a look at that question and find what God says to us.
Many of us feel a bit of anger towards God because we feel we received the ‘leftovers’ when it comes to beauty. We are consumed with our inadequacies which fuel our pride and we begin to rationalize and engage in self pity, blaming God and calling Him unfair.
The truth is that God doesn’t deal with us unfairly. He deals with us only in love. If He dealt with un in fairness we would never be born. Instead, He would judge us for all the sins He know we will commit.
The fact you are alive and healthy means God has been gracious with you. While God loves you, He also has some advice for you about being angry toward Him.
“Woe to the man who fights with his Creator. Does the pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with him who forms it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ or the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’ Woe to the baby just being born who squalls to his father and mother, ‘Why have you produced me? Can’t you do anything right at all?’
– Isaiah 45:9,10 (TLB)
It is true of course, that some people are more attractive than others but our society puts way too much emphasis on the body and not enough on the inside. God doesn’t do that and He instructs us not to do it either.
“Don’t judge by a man’s face or height… I don’t make decisions the way you do! Men judge by outward appearance but I look at a man’s thoughts and intentions”
– 1 Samuel 16:7 (TLB)
If being good-looking is important to God, then Jesus would have been a real hunk, right? But He wasn’t. Jesus was described this way:
“In our eyes there was no attractiveness at all, nothing to make us want him”
– In Isaiah 53:2 (TLB)
We need to focus on walking with God and trusting Him. He has a plan for each of us. He created us just the way we are and He loves us just the way He created us.
Instead of asking the question—“Why am I not more beautiful on the outside?” ask this question: “How can I cooperate with God to help me become more beautiful on the inside?”
