The Commandment to Love: Sinning Against the Law

What is the greatest commandment?  The answer to this question is easily found in the Bible, answered by Jesus Christ.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
(Matthew 22:36-40)

The is one instance of what is known as the Great Commandment, or the Royal Law (James 2:8).  Is is truly the “end” to all of the laws and what we are to do in Christ’s name.  This is why we see love as “the fulfilling of the law (Romans 13:10, and others).”

Sinning Against the Law

Following the Law is something that we should strive for on every occasion.  We are to follow the commandments of God (Leviticus 26:3, Deuteronomy 13:4, John 14:15) in all we do and in all we are.

When we sin we are going against the God’s word and plan for use.  And as the fulfillment of the Law is that of love, we are turning our backs on love.

As we fulfill the Law with the love of God, we are abiding in God’s word.  And as love sets atop all the law and prophets, according to Jesus, when we sin we are doing quite the opposite.

With love, there is no sin.  Living our lives without sin, or at least trying to live our lives without sin is to allow love to fill every aspect of our lives.

However, no one is perfect.  Yet we can strive to abide and live in the love of God, and seek the grace of God who has saved us from our sins with Jesus Christ.

God Bless
