How often do we ask God to speak to us, to give us direction, to guide us and to keep us? The question is, are we listening when he answers? What can we learn from Samuel who had the same problem?
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:7-10, NIV)
Note that Samuel didn’t know the Lord. He was resting quietly without his cell phone, iPod or TV on. When he didn’t know how to respond, he went to his spiritual advisor for help. When the Lord called the next time, Samuel answered… then he obeyed.
Prayer- Lord, we ask to hear you clearly so that we recognise your voice and act in obedience. Amen.
