Next week, my family and I will be traveling from East Texas to Alamogordo, New Mexico. I am looking forward to this trip to spend Thanksgiving with family and friends. The journey is long. It's a 13-hour drive. However, the scenery God provides and the inspiration for upcoming devotions will be endless as we enter the mountain ranges of West Texas and New Mexico.
As we travel west, one of the sights seen along the way are the numerous abandoned farmhouses and foundations. Each one has an untold story. Wouldn't it be interesting if you could run a computer arrow over these images and get an instant bio about the land's history? What did it originally look like? Was it ever finished? Who lived there?
One day, each one of us will have a story to tell about our foundation. When we stand before the Lord and He opens the Book of Life and takes a look at our foundation, what will He find? Will He find us unfinished? Will our story tell of a Christian foundation unfinished and abandoned? I think God wants us to continually build upon that foundation. Never give up. An athlete maintains physical strength and endurance in order to keep doing his or her beloved sport, so a Christian should continue to reinforce and strengthen their daily walk with Christ.
Put your faith into action. Look for opportunities to do good for those around you. Continue in the Word to increase in knowledge. Maintain a life of prayer never ceasing, petitioning God on your own behalf seeking knowledge and wisdom, for your family and friends that they might seek Him more. Also, pray for everyone you might come in contact with that God may open opportunities for His light to shine through you and make a difference in the lives of others.
The firm foundation of any Christian walk is Jesus, the rock. Once that is established and set into place, it cannot be moved.
So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.” Isaiah 28:16 (NIV)
“He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.” Isaiah 33:6 (NIV)
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1Corinthians 3:11(NIV)
However, one must continue to build on that foundation. Don't abandon it or leave it unfinished. Keep working on it, building on top of it and creating something beautiful for the glory of God.
