Church secretary gets rare moment in national spotlight

Isenberg is Pastor Chuck Lawrence’s assistant at Christ Temple Church in Huntington, W.Va. In response to a study which labeled Huntington as the most overweight city in the nation, the roughly 2,000-member congregation has engaged in a group weight loss program.

The ABC News program “Nightline” broadcast a Feb. 19 segment comparing Huntington and Burlington, Vt., which was dubbed the slimmest city in the United States. In a significant portion of that segment, “Nightline” reporter Vicky Mabrey follows Isenberg to the grocery store, around their house and even examines their foodstuffs. During a trip to Kroger, she referred to the produce and fresh meat aisles as “all stuff that God created.”

“My impression of the crew was that they were some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet,” Isenberg said. “They gave us all kinds of tips about healthy eating and were very kind about it.”

Isenberg chuckled at the fact that most church employees from West Virginia don’t make a national news program.

“When I saw the footage I was so impressed how they put it together,” she said. “You have a fear that, oh, it’s going to make me look stupid, but it wasn’t that way at all. I couldn’t have been happier about it.”

Isenberg said it was about 2 ½ weeks from the time the footage was shot before it aired.
