Committees

You either love them or you don’t. I’ve been on many and mostly I don’t. Not because of the people I worked with but just because the process is so often tedious. I finally figured out that’s because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, the right committee gets things done.

The apostles had a problem.

Acts 6:1 -Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution (NKJV).

But they knew their role and they refused to be sideswiped into committee membership.

Acts 6:2- Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.

Instead they laid out the requirements for the necessary job, appointed people and reiterated their own goal.

Acts 6:3-4- Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

So let’s do some soul searching here. What committees are we on? Are they the right ones for our gifts? Has God confirmed the position to us in some way? Are we willing participants? Or are we just filling the space for prestige and glory? What a good thing to pray about.

Prayer: Lord, don’t let us just be a body taking up a chair. May our decisions to serve be made with your common sense, your word and for your glory. For Christ’s sake. Amen.
