When our gas fireplace wouldn’t stay lit, the repair man insisted we needed a new thermal something. I gasped when I heard the price and then again when I glimpsed the part. A puny piece of wire, about 18 inches long and it cost almost $100? Yet without that connecting wire there would be no spark, no fire, and no heat.
The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4, NIV)
Our tongue is the connecting wire between our brain and our mouth. Now if we keep our mouths shut at the right time, and about the right things, we will not cause sparks of disagreement. There will be no heated debates. No unquenchable flames of fiery anger will erupt.
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (James 3:5-6, NIV)
Prayer: Lord, help us think before we speak and then remind us to speak in love. Amen.
