Crummy Gifts

Have you returned all the crummy gifts yet? The ones that are the wrong size, the wrong colour, stuff you hate or whatever your passion for the crummy.

I am of two minds on those things. Sometimes they are not what you want but they might be what you need, even in the future.

Take Mary and the Baby Jesus. Surely she must have thought gold, frankincense and myrrh to be peculiar gifts for a baby. Surely she would have liked a blanket, some Pampers and a few jars of baby food.

On the other hand, one recent baby shower I attended ended up with the baby getting about 20 blankets…way too many for one child.

Later on, Mary’s peculiar gifts would have helped to pay for their time in Egypt. Then she would have been grateful for them.

And that twenty blanket baby? Some were passed on and others will be sewn together for a big boy bed.

Who hasn’t re-gifted a bunch of stuff they didn’t need or want? Perhaps we should just say thank you, accept the gift and be done with it…just as we do with the gift of the Christ.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15, NIV)

Prayer-Lord, forgive us for our unthankfulness in any part of our lives. Amen.
