When I carefully re-read the Book of Daniel, this is what I discovered about his diet plan.
1. Daniel determined in his heart that he would not defile himself (Daniel 1:8)
The key to success: determine in your own heart, to do the right thing
2. God gave Daniel favour with the head guy. (Daniel 1:9)
3. He asked for a 10 day test diet of vegetables (not just carrots!) and water. (Daniel 1:13) This sounded great and holy and wonderful until I read verse 15.
4. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were looking better and had taken on more flesh than all the youths who ate of the king’s rich dainties. (Daniel 1:15, AMP)
Wait a minute—what is that line about taking on more flesh? No matter the food, we gain weight if we eat too much of it. We now return to that pesky fruit of the spirit, self-control.
Do your best to improve your faith. You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, devotion to God, concern for others, and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7, CEV)
So let’s diet if we must but remember that a determined heart, moderation and self-control, form the biggest part of our success.
Prayer – Lord, Help us determine in our own hearts to obey you and use the self-control you offer. Amen
