Extracurricular Angels

Angels ministered to Jesus

The devil departed from Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. (Matthew 4:11)

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. (Luke 22:42-43, NIV)

Even angels don’t know what God is thinking.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Matthew 24:36, NIV)

Angels don’t take on authority that is not theirs.

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (Jude 9, NIV)

Angels don’t mind if you check them out.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. (1 John 4:1-3, NIV)

Be careful not to confuse angels with the Angel of the Lord, which is a definite referral to the third person of the God-head, that is, Christ himself.

The final words on angels? Don’t worship them.

At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”(Revelation 19:10, NIV)
