Eye Service

Ephesians 6:5Not in the way of eye-service [as if they were watching you] and only to please men, but as servants (slaves) of Christ, doing the will of God heartily and with your whole soul. (AMP)

Perhaps I haven’t dusted and swept enough with a dried goose wing (as my granny and my mother-in-law had to). If I had, I would probably appreciate the vacuum more. I don’t like it!

Vacuuming was one of my chores at home. However, when Mom sent me upstairs to do it, I would turn the machine on, keep one hand on the vacuum handle, the other hand on my current reading material and plunk myself on the bed to read. Mom’s footsteps on the stairs were the signal to leap to my feet and head for a dusty corner.

Sometimes our attitude to godly living is very similar. We live our week as we want, letting the dust of disobedience collect in our hearts and minds. Then we put on a great vacuuming act in front of the church audience. But the dust is still there and it still needs to be cleaned up.

Prayer: Lord, You know where we have been presenting a false holiness. Thanks for giving us the desire, the courage and the honesty to clean our house.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
