Facebook for the Rich and Famous

Anyone can join Facebook but a Palm Harbor, Florida man has an answer for those who seek a social network that is a little more exclusive.

Scott Mitchell founded Affluence.org in September and tells the St. Petersburg Times that the site has 20,000 members. Membership is restricted to individual with a net worth of $3 million or annual income of $300,000. If you don’t make it on either of those criteria, you can still join if five other people who qualify for membership vouch for you.

Mitchell calls it “Facebook for the filthy rich.” Members include CEOs, celebrities, investors and socialites from around the world. The average net worth of an Affluence.org member is $32.7 million. I bet discussions on the site extend beyond the photo-sharing, pokes and birthday wishes that have become the norm on Facebook.

Although the site claims to “make life better” by increasing your connections with affluent people from around the world, there is an element of philanthropy and social responsibility. Members are encouraged to share information about their favorite charities and use the site to raise awareness of fund-raising events. Affluence.org says it donates 15% of its monthly sales to selected charities.

Mitchell says the site is growing by 400-500 new members daily and that its audience now surpasses that of traditional print luxury publishers The Robb Report, Conde Nast and Worth. Talk about carving out a niche.

Chuck, would you get 4 of your other friends, along with yourself to “vouch” for me?

400-500 new members daily? I guess, even in these tough economic times, there’s little doubt that there’s still plenty of very well-off people in the world!
