Feed the Birds

2 Corinthians 7:1Having such great promises as these, dear friends, let us turn away from everything wrong, whether of body or spirit, and purify ourselves, living in the wholesome fear of God, giving ourselves to him alone.(LB)

My friend Jean makes it her job to know everything there is to know about birds. She was upset to see a dirty hummingbird feeder in a neighbor’s back yard. She told me that people often feed food to our feathered friends that might actually kill them.

Stale tortillas, dried spaghetti and dog kibble are a no-no.  Additives in bread products accumulate and may cause illness. Chocolate and caffeine can kill. Salted foods are hard to digest and fermented products distort the senses. Raw peanuts contain dangerous fungus and sugary foods alter a bird’s blood chemistry. Cigarette butts are a no-no. Thankfully, most birds are smart enough to avoid stuff that‘s bad for them.

Too bad the same cannot be said for us. In spite of repeated surveys, many children of the Living God persistently choose things that are harmful. TV over Bible study? Sugar  instead of vegetables? And the birds, with no government study in hand; simply refuse what may harm them.

Prayer: Lord, will You please help us to use the good sense You gave us? Help us turn from the wrong choices in our daily living. Remind us constantly that You created and live in these bodily temples for which your Son, Christ, died. Amen
