Find Someone

At a recent event the leader insisted we play an ice-breaker game called ‘Find Someone.’

She gave us a list of 30 questions along these lines. Find someone who lives in an apartment, hates coffee, snores or has a cat. We got to talk to everyone in the room and some of the answers were surprising.

However one of the questions was problematic. In a room full of Christians, I had trouble find one who had read the entire Bible. Frankly, I was shocked.

If someone penned a love letter to you, wouldn’t you want to read the whole thing? Would you depend on someone else to explain the thing to you?

Even the great prophet Daniel read Scripture. (Daniel 9:2)

The Bible says that:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)

Here is the same verse in the Message.

God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey. Nothing and no one is impervious to God’s Word. We can’t get away from it—no matter what.

Can’t get away from it no matter what???? Maybe if you refuse to read it for yourself.

Prayer- Father, stir up your people to read your word for themselves so they might never be led astray by others or by their own selves. Amen.
