How Cold Is It Where You Are?

Revelation 3:13-17: “I know you well-you are neither hot or cold: I wish you were one or the other. But since you are merely lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth. You say “I am rich with everything I want; I don’t need a thing.” And you don’t realize that spiritually you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. (LB)

Never one for cold, my dad, Floyd Treanor, describes a Manitoba winter in his book “Two Years North of 53 Degrees.”

We got a fire going and sat around getting warm. I said, “Do you fellows take your clothes off when going to bed?”

My brother in law, Mindi said, “You had better leave them on tonight and see how you make out”.

They made a bed for me with a mattress on top of some fish boxes. When I saw them pull their socks over their heads, I knew I was in trouble.

Dad had a new definition for the word ‘cold!’

God called the Laodicean church lukewarm (that is neither hot nor cold). Content with material wealth, they had no idea that they were spiritually poor.  What about us? What is our temperature? If we are cold toward God, let us at least own up to that and confess that our feelings for Him are in the deep freeze. If we are lolly gagging around at the halfway mark, let’s admit.  Lukewarm won’t make a good cup of tea, let alone a worship.

Prayer: God, You are always clear, today even painfully so. Help us check our temperature gauge and then make appropriate adjustments in Your favor! In Jesus’  Name. Amen.
