Is Death Ever Good?

To most of us, the death of a loved one is traumatic and overwhelmingly sad. However, from God’s point of view and maybe from ours after we read this, there are good reasons for death and maybe even a bit of joy.

Christians die, when God in his wisdom, calls us home to heaven. He only calls us when our purpose on earth has been fulfilled.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7, NIV)

Death may spare us more suffering here on earth.

“As for you, go back home. When you set foot in your city, the boy will die. All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only one belonging to Jeroboam who will be buried, because he is the only one in the house of Jeroboam in whom the Lord, the God of Israel, has found anything good.

(1 Kings 14:12, see 1-14 for full story, NIV)

God may chasten through death.

Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

(From 1 Corinthians 11:27-30, NIV)

The really good news is that it is always better to be with the Lord than to remain on earth.
