For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16
We use the phrase “Jesus loves you” very quickly and glibly. It has become a catch phrase for the modern Christian. The question is how much does He love me? I “love” a good dinner; some people “love” to go to the movies and so on. Is this how God loves us? While we often use the wrong word to describe our likes and preferences, God was serious when He said He loves us. This is not a passing fancy or an emotional attachment; God's love for humans goes to the very death of Jesus on the cross.
God loves us even before we love Him. In fact, He loves us even if we don’t love Him. He loves us when we are worshipping Him and He loves us when we are cursing Him. He may not always love our behavior, but He always loves us. (See related blog) The wonderful part is that while we can never really deserve His love, it is always there. He waits with open arms for us to come to Him. He forgives us when we hurt Him and He calls us His children.
He even has the greatest of all gifts waiting for us when we return to Him. Jesus said that if we believe in Him that we will never perish, but receive everlasting (eternal) life. And all we have to do is to return the Father. Adam left the Father in the Garden thousands of years ago, now God gives us the chance to return, with every sin forgiven. How can we not take advantage of His marvelous love.
