Ephesians 5:3, 5–But immorality (sexual vice) and all impurity [lustful, rich, wasteful living] or greediness must not even be named among you, as is fitting and proper among the saints (God’s consecrated people). Let there be no filthiness, obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly, corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming: but instead voice your thankfulness [to God]. My sewing teachers stressed that pattern straight-of-grain must always line up with fabric straight-of- grain. Privately, I thought this tip highly over-rated and a waste of time and of material. “What’s a quarter inch one way or the other?” I said to myself. Then I made an outfit just a fraction off grain. Snake-like, that dress twined and twisted itself around my body like a living thing.
I was smugly self-satisfied about my spiritual position as a Christian too, until I began to read my Bible. I found out that I was way off the grain and I had a long way to go.
Philippians 3:17 “Brethren, follow my example and observe those who live after the pattern we have set for you. (AMP)
Yikes! There’s a verse to make us nervous! What if someone is following us? Someone is. Are we on God’s straight-of-grain?
Prayer: Lord, we shudder at the thought that our lifestyle endangers another’s walk. Forgive us. Help us choose your path today. Amen.
