Lungs of the Earth

This year’s World Day of Prayer program was prepared for us by the women of Suriname which is in the NE part of South America. They concentrated their prayers on the environment and described the tropical rainforest area as the ‘lungs of the earth.’

If the rainforest is the lungs then Christians must be the heart of the earth. Our hearts are attuned to God and what he wants us to do to further his kingdom.

But then there are other hearts, which are not so true to Christ.

For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. (Matthew 15:19, NIV)

“Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) (Mark 7:18-19, NIV)

Dare I ask you what you are harboring in yours? It is not our environment that makes us what we are so much as it is what we have in our hearts that is not pleasing to the Lord.

Prayer-Lord- point out where our heart contents fail you. Lord God, we ask you to forgive us…or as the women of Suriname say it—Masra wi e begi fu gi wi pardon. Amen.
