Naming

How did you name your children?  Today’s trend is to pick 3 to 4 names wait till the baby is born and name it accordingly. Does he look like a Harry, Bill or John? Should we name her Martha, Melissa or Hannah?

However, our Christmas story parents had their child’s name foretold to them by angels.

Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him. But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John. (Luke 1:12-13, NLT)

Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel even before he was conceived. (Luke 2:21, NLT)

All the sources I checked out say that John means ‘the grace or mercy of the Lord, or Jehovah has shown favour.

And Jesus? It means the Lord delivers, saves, rescues.

I guess God really knew what he was doing with those names after all…

Prayer – Thanks God,  for giving us Jesus, a Saviour with the name above all other names,  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,  in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11, NLT)
