Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)

We were singing Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) (lyrics © Capitol Christian Music Group, Songwriters: Joel Houston / Matt Crocker / Salomon Ligthelm) at our church Sunday morning and this line really caught my attention.

So I will call upon Your name and keep my eyes above the waves. What on earth does that mean? How will I survive when both my nose and my mouth are under water? I am going down, seriously down into the deep. I am drowning. There is no hope and yet the words say,

‘I will call upon Your name and keep my eyes above the waves.’

Later the song begs that God would take us deeper…deeper than our eyes; over our head?

This happened to the writer of Lamentations.

The waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish. (Lamentations 3:54, NIV)

But then… he called on God…

I called on your name, Lord, from the depths of the pit.  You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.”  You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.”(Lamentations 3:55-57, NIV)

If you feel like you are drowning today, you too can call upon his name and God who is faithful will answer.

Prayer-Father, we thank you that no matter how deep we get into our life’s mess, you will answer our call for help. Amen.
