Our Mission as a Servant

Did you know that we have a mission to be a servant?  It’s not something that many of us like to fully embrace.  After all, being a servant has somewhat of a negative connotation to it…at least in the way our flesh sees it.

But if we really want to be anything like Jesus, then we will grasp the reality that Jesus came to this earth to serve.  In Matthew 20:28 we read that Jesus, the Son of Man, did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.

Serving is giving.  It is pouring out onto others.  It is putting self aside but I think many of us struggle with that.  I know I have my moments.  I’m too tired; I need “me” time; my schedule doesn’t allow; and I have more important things to do.

These are just some of the excuses that we come up with.  But Jesus always made time.  He was interrupted so often that it’s a wonder He was ever able to spend time with God.  But He did.  I believe God granted Jesus that time because he chose to serve.

You see, I think we get it backward.  We think that when we finally have the time, we will serve.  But Jesus wants us to serve first and then we will get the time.  I have seen this played out so many times in my life.  It’s like time is stretched when you truly give it to Him.

Life keeps us busy it’s true.  But in the midst of our busyness we have to be willing to set aside what we think is important.  We have to focus instead on what matters most, serving others.  That is a true representation of living a Christ-like life.  Your mission…my mission, is to be a servant.
