Promises

Have you heard how God called Terah, Abraham’s father, into the Promised Land but instead Terah ‘settled’ in Haran? Me, too. I’ve even taught it. The basis for this assumption is Genesis 11:31.

However this morning, this turned up in Acts 7:2-3, AMP.

And he answered, Brethren and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our forefather Abraham when he was still in Mesopotamia, before he [went to] live in Haran, And He said to him, Leave your own country and your relatives and come into the land (region) that I will point out to you.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! God called Abraham, not Terah. It took a long while for those promises to be fulfilled, but they were ever before Abraham.

And Terah lived 205 years; and Terah died in Haran. (Genesis 11:32) Now [in Haran] the Lord said to Abram, Go for yourself [for your own advantage] away from your country, from your relatives and your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:1, AMP)

It’s a bit easier to understand Abraham’s laughter by chapter 17. After all, he’d obeyed decades before and after all that, NOW??? NOW??? God wants to give him an heir?

After all he’d been waiting nearly a lifetime…

God’s promises to us are exactly that, God’s promises. He fulfils them when He wants to.

Prayer- Lord, forgive us our impatience. Help us to wait on Your timeline, with grace. Amen.
