Genesis 3:5– And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike at his heel (NIV).
Like most women, I shudder at the thought of snakes. I run from their presence. I even switch the channel if they show up on TV. You can see why Mel Gibson’s movie, ‘The Passion of the Christ’ disturbed me. While in the Garden of Eden, Jesus is tempted by a person who represents Satan. This person is accompanied by a slithering snake. In a startling scene, Christ strikes out His heel and crushes the snake’s head. This bothered me, not because I couldn’t switch the channel or get out of my theatre seat fast enough, but because I suddenly understood that I entertain snakes in my own life. Those snakes are Satan’s deceptions.
At Jesus’crucifixion, Satan bruised Jesus in the heel, but Jesus stomped on Satan’s head and thoroughly destroyed any real power he has, through death and sin in our lives. Now Satan’s only remaining power lies in deception; he wants us to believe that he still has the power to kill and destroy. Our own power comes in the truth of Jesus Christ, who promised that the truth will set us free (John 8:32). When we depend totally on Christ, our actions, habits and thoughts will be nothing less than Christ-like.
Prayer: Lord, give us the courage to get in on the stomping. Help us kill in ourselves, anything that is not like You. Amen.
