Here is Christ, newly baptized, yet God sends him into the wilderness to confront his worst enemy, Satan. For 40 days, Christ ate nothing. Talk about sacrifice! The devil didn’t bother him until he was very hungry. (Luke 4:2)
That’s a keynote for us. When we are at our weakest, the devil takes the most advantage. We have done things in our low places that we would never have done if we were well-rested, healthy and aware.
The devil starts by placing doubt. “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.” He knows Christ is the Son of God but he wanted to place doubt in Christ himself. Then he offers worthless treasures. “I can give you the world if you will worship me.” Finally, he incorrectly uses scripture. “Jump because God will send angels to protect you.”
Jesus answers with these thoughts…all from scripture. “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone. You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him. The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.”
Satan left until another opportunity presented itself. (Luke 4:1-14, NLT)
Stand firm in your troubles, my friends. Take care of your health. Prepare for times of testing by spending time with God, and memorizing scripture.
Are you ready for any time of testing?
