The ‘I’ of Me Can’t Save You

We look next door and say their color is _______________ therefore they are less than me. Thus, I will treat them badly, because ‘I’ am better than they are.

I voted for ____________________ and they didn’t get in. Therefore, I will dispute the authority of the new government because ‘I’ am always right and the other guy’s vote doesn’t count.

I have a right to use a weapon when the world is not to my satisfaction. I have the right to remove the life from another person because I hate something or somebody, perhaps even myself.

God says this:

But I will be merciful only if you stop your evil thoughts and deeds and start treating each other with justice; only if you stop exploiting foreigners, orphans, and widows; only if you stop your murdering; and only if you stop harming yourselves by worshiping idols. Then I will let you stay in this land that I gave to your ancestors to keep forever.

Do you really think you can steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, and follow other Gods? Surely, I see all the evil going on. I, the Lord, have spoken!  While you were doing these wicked things, says the Lord, I spoke to you about it repeatedly, but you would not listen. I called out to you, but you refused to answer.  No wonder I am so angry!  (From Jeremiah 7:5-18)
